Absolutely phenomenal experience these past three days at the Center For Innovation and the Mayo Clinic during their change-making conference, Transform 2011. I was floored by the energy during the event and honored to even be in the same room with such groundbreaking individuals. A true honor and historic moment in my life, thank you to all who helped put on the event and for those who connected with and impacted me. I’m ecstatic about what this conference will lead to in the world of healthcare. Amazing.

Founder Bio

Jessica Floeh, a human-centered designer and 2010 graduate of Parsons The New School For Design, began Hanky Pancreas™ during her masters thesis addressing a theme of design, technology, and the human condition. For her research she focused on the socio-psychological impact of wearable diabetes technologies and worked with a group of women with diabetes in New York. Through them she was inspired to create designs that would ignite conversation and support in everyday environments. She continues to be inspired by each one of her wearers through the stories and support they share.

Since graduating at the top of her class at Parsons, she has received recognition from both fashion experts and leaders in health technology. She is honored to have been a keynote speaker at Medtronic Minimed, received accolades from Core77, DiabetesMine, and Humana, and exhibited designs at EYEBEAM in New York, Disseny Hub Barcelona (DHUB) in Spain, and at Sheffield Hallam University for The 2011 European Conference Design 4 Health in the UK. In September 2011, she won an opportunity to share her vision at The Mayo Clinic during Transform 2011.

Jessica was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at 4 years old and after many years of injections she started using an insulin pump. While her medical health improved, she struggled with the social inconvenience and wearability of the device. As a result, she began conceptualizing a way to improve the experience in terms of comfort and confidence. Jessica is currently creating handmade and custom solutions and stands behind the evidence that her products represent a movement toward a socially dynamic and new way of interacting with diabetes technology. In addition to giving all she’s got to Hanky Pancreas™, Jessica is living in Chicago and working as a creative brand strategist at the medical technology company Brainlab.

For a person living with diabetes, the social and psychological impact of the illness can really affect day-to-day management. Individuals who feel more social support living with the disease tend to be in better health than those who do not. Studies show that patients with diabetes are more likely than their non-diabetic peers to develop anxiety, depression, and disordered eating behavior.

While insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitors serve as significantly better alternatives to multiple daily injections and finger sticks, most people are concerned with how it will make them feel and appear to others. Women, specifically within the range of 15 – 35, are less likely to use these treatment options due to reasons that are typically socio-psychological in nature. Some find these devices socially inconvenient and difficult to integrate into clothing or on the body.

Hanky Pancreas, LLC strives to address these issues by providing fashionable yet functional design solutions that transform the devices into comfortable yet decorative additions to any outfit. The mission is to ignite new and more positive conversations, raise awareness, create support in everyday environments and improve overall health for those living with diabetes.

Launched in 2010 by Jessica Floeh, Hanky Pancreas, LLC manufactures, develops, and markets products for individuals wearing diabetes technologies such as insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitors, or CGMs. The products, currently for women, provide a more comfortable, accessible, and fashionable alternative to current after-market products available.

Among the core products are the Clip Slip™, Hanky Hoop™, Bib ‘n Tucker™, and Weave Sleeve™ that cater to different levels of comfort and provide multiple options for wearing. These products interface directly with the medical devices and are made with protective materials meant for electronics that also feel good against the body. Other materials commonly used are sheer fabrics that make the important screens and buttons on the devices visible and accessible. The core products provide the function for the fashion, acting as a base for interchangeable accessories. The accessories are made of materials such as artificial flowers, feathers, and various fabrics. Some of the core products are made to be used with common accessories such as scarves and long necklaces.

Jessica Floeh conceptualized Hanky Pancreas, LLC in 2009 during her master’s thesis in Design and Technology at Parsons The New School For Design in New York City. After receiving significant press and accolades it was established as an limited liability company on June 14, 2010 and has been selling products at various diabetes events and through an online store as of February 2011. Hanky Pancreas, LLC is currently owned and operated by Jessica Floeh in Chicago.
